Recent Movies (September 2026)
Resident Evil (2026)
Anxiety-inducing horror that has no right to be this funny. I had a great time. Dialogue (monologue a lot of the time) = 10/10.
Bit of a chaotic sloppy ending, not sure about all that swinging-around camera work. Lil too much like a bad Marvel fight scene.
The Raccoon City rooftops scene—you know which one I mean—was amazing. The whole icy-road-helping-woman-cop-escort sequence was like a short film in itself.
Primetime (2026)
Thrilling watch. Also hilarious. Many striking shots. Like, this one’s stunning visually.
R. Pat is captivating. He presents a strange, menacing, yet never quite intimidating figure. Truly uncomfortable performance (I mean this as a compliment). Even during the storm scene in the room with his producer, it’s more like he’s awkwardly creepy than dangerous.
Also, Merritt Wever and Matthew Maher are fantastic.
Buddy (2026)
Bizarre and campy and completely wonderful viewing experience. Laughed and winced throughout. Got caught up in the first ~15 minutes when it’s just the Buddy show, and you’re not zoomed out into the frame of the movie yet.
Absurd and just the right amount of uncomfortable. Ending fell a lil flat—a bit of uncertainty in the world-building aspect that really was unnecessary.
Some great audience reactions in the theater, especially while they’re in the woods with the… two strangers.
Afterward, immediately rewatched Don’t Hug me I’m Scared.
Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma (2026)
Was hammered after a day at the beach. Was eating chicken tenders at Nitehawk Prospect Park while that Gillian Anderson KFC scene was on. (Gillian Anderson is amazing in this movie.)
Was on my own among many dates in the theater. Oof. But I liked the movie. I didn’t know it was the same writer/director (Jane Schoenbrun) as I Saw the TV Glow until afterward, and it immediately made so much sense.
A little on the nose with the name “Little Death.” Anyway, the title is very accurate.
I Saw the TV Glow was a 10/10 incredible movie. This one was pretty good.
Serpent’s Path (2024)
Weird, a bit slow but not boring, and pretty funny. Not sure I loved the climax, delivery-wise. Bothered me the way Christoph Waltz’s evil-Joker-maze did in Spectre.
Why French? Why remake your own movie, Kiyoshi Kurosawa?
The partner dynamic is a lot of fun. It’s like a buddy cop movie but they’re not cops or buddies, in fact who-even-are-they-and-how-do-they-know-each-other is an important aspect of the plot. Also who-are-all-these-other-people.
Also now I finally get the line from the Barenaked Ladies’ “One Week”:
Like Kurosawa I make mad films
ok I don’t make films
but if I did they’d have a samurai
Premature Reviews
- Wild Horse Nine — I am going to love this movie.
- Other Mommy — Jessica Chastain looks terrifying. As my dad said, “Bad news for ball pits.”
- The Social Reckoning — It’s not going to live up to The Social Network. I bet it’ll be a decent corporate espionage thriller with way too much to (try to) say, too loudly, about technology and power and social engineering and all the stuff you already know.
- Digger — the more trailers I see, the less hope I have.
